In her newest report, The Human Side of Technology & Learning, eLearning Guild research director Jane Bozarth describes the many ways technology is supporting, enhancing, augmenting and sometimes replacing humans, and explores what that means for both workers and learning professionals moving forward.

Bozarth’s research portends that emerging tech will trigger profound changes in the workplace that will indelibly impact L&D practitioners. She predicts that in the future:

  • The design of L&D courses will evolve as people depend less on screens.
  • Self-directed learning will increase.
  • L&D will provide concierge-type services to help workers access material specific to their needs.
  • Safety and customer service training will change dramatically.
  • L&D professionals will “train” digital humans that can display empathy and emotion.

She anticipates, however, that humans and machines will have a supporting symbiosis. “Despite fears that humans will be replaced, many technologies depend on human input and programming. For instance, the complementarity of humans and AI in decision-making situations is usually characterized by the role of each in working with uncertainty, complexity, and equivocality,” she writes.
